24 Hours of Emergency/24 Weeks of Recovery

Mexico (MX) & Puerto Rico (PR) Resilience Fund

Americas for Conservation + Arts and its Latina Environmental Giving Circle, in partnership with CREA Results, El Instituto, Benitez Strategies, Diles Que Voten, Heuristica Comunicación, GreenLatinos, the National Latino Farmers & Ranchers Trade Association, Nunovations, Naropa University y For the Care of Children have launched the Mexico (MX) & Puerto Rico (PR) Resilience Fund to help meet natural disaster-related needs and recovery in both regions.

Your gift to the MX & PR Resilience Fund will go to help families and communities recover from the recent earthquakes and hurricanes that have devastated the lives of many in these Latin American regions. Our goal is to help those who were affected rebuild and restore their homes, communities, environment, and lives. Our work began within 24 hours after the disasters occurred and will continue for at least 24 weeks to accompany and support the recovery process.

Solidarity, compassion, and giving are all part of our identity as Latinos, and as Americans. We unite in times of tragedy, we thrive in challenging times, and we give in times of need. Our brothers and sisters, our families in Mexico and Puerto Rico need our support now more than ever.

AFCA and its partners consider Mexico and Puerto Rico are the two wings of the same bird and we are committed to rebuilding both nations.

You can make a one-time donation but we highly encourage weekly donations.

Your support will go to:

United Way MX (Fondo Unido México) - This responsible and professional nonprofit institution encourages voluntary participation of the private sector to contribute to the development and sustainable livelihoods of the poorest communities in Mexico. They are committed to providing natural disaster relief to communities in need who were affected by the September 7 and September 19 earthquakes in Mexico.

Departamento de la Comida in Puerto Rico. -  A grassroots organization powering local regional-food systems including sustainable farming practices and farmers markets. They are committed to providing food and relief for those affected due to the devastation of Hurricane Irma and Hurricane Maria.

Thank you for your generous support in the recovery of MX & PR families and communities, the campaing 24 Hours of Emergency/24 Weeks of Recovery - Mexico (MX) & Puerto Rico (PR) Resilience Fund has ended. However, the Puerto Rico 24 Months Resilience Campaign still needs your support.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the MX & PR Resilience Fund?

The MX & PR Resilience Fund will help communities affected by the recent natural disasters in both Mexico and Puerto Rico. With your support, we will help rebuild the homes and lives of these communities for at least the next 24 weeks.

  • Individual donations given to the MX & PR Resilience Fund will be distributed to United Way MX and Departamento de la Comida in the affected areas.

  • The fund will focus on immediate, mid- and long-term recovery.

The MX & PR Resilience Fund ended on March 8th, 2018. The Puerto Rico 24 Months Resilience Campaign still needs your support.

Why have we established this fund?

As a Latino community, we come together as a family in times of disaster and crisis. The fund is established to answer the call of need and uphold this solidarity as brothers and sisters to Mexico and Puerto Rico. Many of the organizers of the fund have families, friends, and roots in these Latin American regions.

This is why we have partnered with United Way in Mexico and Departamento de la Comida in Puerto Rico. Our goal is to support community rebuilding and recovery after the immediate relief efforts. The fund would lay the groundwork for at least 24 weeks of the long-term recovery, which is expected to take several years. The fund plans to also offer short-term assistance while concentrating on long-term recovery.

How will the fund’s money be distributed?

All of the money of the MX & PR Resilience Fund will be distributed to provide relief in the regions affected by natural disasters in Mexico and Puerto Rico.

We will be working in the affected areas to determine the best distribution plan.

What about credit card processing fees?

The credit card processing fees are the fees charged by PayPal for charities.

  • PayPal offers discounted transaction rates for 501(c)(3) charities for most products and consistently low rates for all other nonprofits. No extra fees for setup, statements, withdrawals, or cancellation.

  • 2.2% + $0.30 per transaction and no monthly fee for charities.

How will United Way Mexico and Departamento de la Cocina be accountable for the fund?

Both United Way Mexico and Departamento de la Comida will be responsible to report the total amount of money raised and updated on a regular basis. Distributions will also be tracked on this website. All grants and individual donations for the Puerto Rico Resilience Fund above $1000.00 will be accounted for in a ten percent fund administration fee to assure the long term professional management of the Funds' related programs housed at AFC+A.

What is "PR 24 Month Resilience"?

This is a dedicated fund to: power the restoration and the establishment of local sustainable food systems and reforestation of decimated forests; incubate authentic civic engagement through mobilization of ‘green brigades (small groups mobilized for the cleaning phase, planting phase, and overall education of farmers communities on sustainable practices); mobilize Promotores Verdes as principal stewards of the brigades and the envisioning of restoration efforts past 24 months; create self sustaining farms that are autonomous and efficient with irrigation systems, including rainwater collection techniques & clean solar energy; chronicle and document the relief and rebuild efforts to use as a model of resilient communities’ ability to rebuild in the face of climate change destruction.
